All Along the Watchtower

All Along the Watchtower

by Bob Dylan

Analysis: Tough-O-Meter

(4) Base Camp

The language in this song couldn't be more simple, with nary an SAT word in sight. On the other hand, the joker and the thief talk in riddles, like a secret code only they can understand. For example, when we hear "the hour is getting late," we don't know whether to run for the nearest fall-out shelter or whether it's just time to look for someplace to sleep. But most importantly, it's a song! If you're tired of thinking about the lyrics, just pay attention to the melody.
