Atlas Sightings

  • The Metamorphoses by Ovid 2BC

Ovid can't seem to get his story straight: first he says that Atlas was turned into stone by Perseus, but then he says that Atlas has a conflict with Perseus' great grandson, Heracles. Hmmm, something doesn't line up there.

  • Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto 1532

This subversively funny Renaissance author turns Atlas into a mortal (be it, an enchanted one) in his epic romance poem. What do you think? How would Atlas fare as a mortal?

  • Hercules in New York 1968

Back in his early 20s, Arnold Schwarzenegger took a turn as Hercules in this must-see (if only for the high levels of ridiculousness) action comedy.

  • Jim Henson's The Storyteller: Greek Myths 1990

Atlas makes an appearance in the Muppet master's version of the tale of Perseus.

  • Hercules: the Legendary Journeys 1999

Our unlucky Titan friend flexes his muscles quite a bit in this 90s-style TV series, which inspired the famous spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess. Making TV history one god at a time.

  • Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Titan's Curse 2005

In this installation of the Percy Jackson series, Atlas is the bad guy. Believe us, you don't want to mess with him.

  • God of War II 2007

This video game veers away from Greek mythology by showing Atlas imprisoned in Tartarus where he's forced to hold up the earth instead of the sky. We guess accuracy isn't their main goal.
