Opinion:
“In a world where ignorance keeps its citizens comfortably compliant, it comes as no surprise that those in the position of being able to suppress information are also the most liberated by its power. Bernard, for example, has intimate knowledge of the World State conditioning processes, which allows him to perceive (though not overcome) the machinations behind human social interactions. Mustapha, whose knowledge of World State secrets is unsurpassed, has greater personal freedom than any other character in the novel. Although he lives in the dystopia, he makes an active, informed decision to do so; moreover, his knowledge of potentially-damaging information earns him a position of immense power, which ironically allows him unfettered access to the very knowledge it is his duty to conceal.”
