The Brothers Karamazov

The Brothers Karamazov

by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Antagonist

Character Role Analysis

Fyodor Karamazov

Before he is killed, Fyodor Karamazov is one of the primary antagonists in The Brothers Karamazov. An unapologetic sinner, he takes a perverse pleasure in flouting his sons' dreams and aspirations.

Smerdyakov

Smerdyakov expertly plays off the Karamazovs' needs and weaknesses to engineer the murder of Fyodor Karamazov. He is the exact opposite of Alyosha: subtle and cunning, while Alyosha is honest and open.
