Common Core Standards

Grade 6

Language L.6.2

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

By sixth grade, students are well into Comma Land, and they won’t be getting out any time soon. According to this standard, students should be learning how to use commas properly with nonrestrictive elements, which go like this, and parentheses and dashes for parenthetical stuff (like this). By the way, if students still can't spell some common words correctly at this point, we suggest pointing them to The Oatmeal's guide on how to not suck at spelling.

P.S. If your students need to brush up on their spelling and grammar, send 'em over to our Grammar Learning Guides so they can hone their skills before conquering the Common Core.
