Common Core Standards

Grade 7

Reading RL.7.6

Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.

People think in many different ways, and children don't begin to realize this until early adolescence. This Common Core Standard exists to guide students on that path to realization, while doing it in an academic setting. For example, it may be weird for students to read about Brian's thoughts on food after the events of Hatchet, and they might be able to realize that the reason why he views food differently than normal people is because of his experiences during the novel.

Example 1

Here's an activity to use when students are reading, well, anything.

Have students use a graphic organizer to record their ideas and locate support to analyze characters in each of the readings, both fiction and nonfiction. They can also complete additional activities to look at character personas and traits.
