What if, as we were trying to make a choice, the very thing we were choosing was anticipating our choice and trying to ruin it?

Meet game theory.

Game theory refers to the branch of math that tries to pick the outcome of an event where multiple factors play in, each with a different goal. In some ways, it's the most realistic way to think about probability, but it's also one of the most complicated.

And game theory is much bigger than just math. It's used in fields as far-ranging as economics, psychology, and politics. Anywhere multiple people are trying to preserve their best interests, we can make a game theory model. This course will cover the basics and give you a taste of what game theory is all about and what it can do.

Keep your eyes open, because game theory is everywhere. Seriously, if academia were the Internet, game theory would be trending right now.

Required Skills

In order to pick up what game theory is putting down, you need to be very comfortable with the concept of matrices.

Unit Breakdown

1 Game Theory - Game Theory

Game theory is the study of how we make choices when there are multiple possible payoffs and the actions of another person to consider.

We can model games using matrices of every possible outcome based on the players' options, then use those matrices and some formulas to determine things like the ideal strategy for each player, the chance of a player making a particular choice, and what each player stands to lose. Most importantly, it will help us figure out who will win.
