  • Back at a rich farm near Kumalo's village of Ndotsheni, James Jarvis receives the news that his son Arthur has been shot by a black burglar in Johannesburg.
  • Of course, he is utterly shocked and heartbroken.
  • The captain of the local police, van Jaarsveld, offers to help Jarvis arrange for a flight down to Johannesburg.
  • While van Jaarsveld makes a call to the police in nearby Pietermaritzburg, Jarvis breaks the news of Arthur's death to his wife.
