The Death of Ivan Ilych

The Death of Ivan Ilych

by Leo Tolstoy

Analysis: What's Up With the Title?

We learn from the title that there's a guy named Ivan Ilych. This might sound crude and cold, but he gets sick and dies, and that's what the story is all about. The important part is that in the process of facing his own death, Ivan realizes that his life was a huge mistake. This isn't as bad as it sounds, though; at the end of the story, Ivan discovers the true meaning of life.
