Hand Clap Lee

Character Analysis

Hand Clap's name is pretty fun, both because he is a notorious exaggerator and because he is the person who figuratively holds Moon Shadow's hand in the travel from China to America. We might get the idea that Hand Clap is a ham of sorts, the kid who brags about how much glue he ate or how many Yu-Gi-Oh cards he has. This inclination to hyperbolize, however, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sure, he builds up Moon Shadow's expectations of the Land of the Golden Mountain (not to spoil the book, but there is no literal mountain of gold). But this depth of imagination also speaks to a depth of heart.
