Character Role Analysis

Mother is more significant for the role she plays in Moon Shadow's head than for her actions in the book. When the going gets rough, Moon Shadow thinks of his mom and is rejuvenated by remembering how patient and encouraging she is. When he starts to pity himself even a little, he remembers that Mother has it worse in China being without her husband and her son and running the farm on her own. Basically, Mother keeps Moon Shadow going.
