When Rinaldi visits Frederic in the field hospital after Frederic gets hit by a trench mortar shell, Rinaldi asks Frederic if he had committed a heroic act. Frederic replies that he didn't, that he was blown up "while [they] were eating cheese." Frederic's brief account to Rinaldi of the event isn't accurate.
