Filling Station

Filling Station

by Elizabeth Bishop

Analysis: Trivia

Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge

Bishop lived in many places in the course of her lifetime, so we're betting she saw her fair share of filling stations, from Nova Scotia to Massachusetts (all over), from Europe to Key West, and from New York to Brazil and everywhere in between. (Source.)

Bishop suffered from depression and alcoholism all of her life, which, we're thinking, might have had something to do with the fact that the speaker looks at this filling station and sees nothing but dirt… at first. (Source.)

We are not alone in our sneezes: Bishop had terrible allergies that interfered with her life, and often kept her home from school as a young girl. (Source.)
