In the 1950s, Diners Club started with a few hundred cardholders. In 2012, there are 160 million American credit cardholders. If you have a heartbeat and a job, it’s pretty easy to get a credit card. Card users typically have 3 or 4 cards a piece and it’s not uncommon to see someone in line in front you sorting through a one-inch stack of them: “Here, try this one.” (One in ten consumers has more than 10 credit cards.)
