The Rise of Index Funds: Vanguard

Vanguard was the pioneering uber index fund. And it made its name as an index fund – not an exchange traded fund. John Bogle, their curmudgeonly CEO/ founder was the first to popularly (very unpopularly to fat-commish-charging Wall Street) observe that mutual funds regularly underperform index funds over time. He “invented” the industry by creating the first index funds which reflected broad market baskets and the story is legend. (www.vanguard.com)
