Vanguard was the pioneering uber index fund. And it made its name as an index fund – not an exchange traded fund. John Bogle, their curmudgeonly CEO/ founder was the first to popularly (very unpopularly to fat-commish-charging Wall Street) observe that mutual funds regularly underperform index funds over time.
