Freak the Mighty

Freak the Mighty

by Rodman Philbrick

Lies and Deceit Theme

Freak the Mighty shows lying in all its forms: lies we tell for protection, lies we tell for self-gain, and even lies we tell ourselves. And it's not just the bad guys who let the fibs roll. In fact, Freak tells more lies than almost any other character, and he might just be the most stand-up guy in the book. So what do you think: is it okay to lie when it's not malicious? What would Rodman Philbrick say?

Questions About Lies and Deceit

  1. Are there any lies in Freak the Mighty that are justifiable? Even necessary?
  2. How are the lies Freak tells different from the lies Kenny Kane tells? Are there any similarities?
  3. Is there anyone in the book that Max can trust completely?

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Freak is the biggest liar in the book.
