The Garden of Forking Paths

The Garden of Forking Paths

by Jorge Luis Borges

Antagonist

Character Role Analysis

Captain Richard Madden (alternatively, The Chief)

Yu Tsun's most obvious opponent in this spy drama is Captain Richard Madden, the English agent whose mission is to capture Yu Tsun, and who for the duration of the story is right on Yu Tsun's heels. However, Yu Tsun's hatred is directed at his own boss, The Chief, who he says has degraded him by forcing him to work as a spy. He seems to regard The Chief as a sort of emotional antagonist.
