This episode of the award-winning PBS series American Masters takes a look at the phenomenal career and short life of the American composer. His rapid rise in the 1920s and his enormous impact on American music are effectively explored.
This production, directed by Trevor Nunn, premiered at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1986 and then was re-staged in the BBC studios in 1993. It is the only performance of the Gershwin opera available on film.
