It’s a foggy day. And really wet. But then again, it’s marshland, and it’s England.
Pip sees cows on his way to find the convict. He imagines they know he’s just robbed his sister’s pantry. Cows are talking.
The convict is sleeping like a baby, so in order not to startle him, Pip gently speaks to him and puts his hand on the convict’s shoulder.
BUT IT’S NOT THE CONVICT! It’s a younger man who Pip assumes to be the bloodthirsty sidekick the convict initially referred to. This man runs away in spite of the iron chain around his leg.
Pip is confused, but continues in search of his very own convict. Eureka! His convict looks pretty beat up, but really appreciates the food.
Pip inquires as to whether his convict is going to share any of the food with the sidekick. The convict initially thinks nothing of it, assuming Pip is referring to the imaginary sidekick he cooked up to scare him, but then he realizes Pip actually saw another man on the marshes.
The convict is shaken, runs off, madly trying to free himself of his iron with the file.
