In Deathly Hallows we learn about the history of the Bloody Baron, one of the Hogwarts ghosts. The Baron was in love with Rowena Ravenclaw's daughter, Helena. When she refused him, he stabbed her out of anger. Realizing what he had done to his beloved Helena, he killed himself.
