Huckleberry Finn Timeline and Summary

  • Huck resists being taught knowledge, religion, and etiquette by Miss Watson and the Widow. In that order.
  • He plays a prank on Jim along with Tom.
  • He sneaks out of bed in the middle of the night to play with Tom and some others boys in a kind of cops ’n robbers game.
  • We learn all about Huck’s drunken Pap.
  • Huck gives all his money to Judge Thatcher based on having a bad feeling. And it’s not heartburn.
  • He gets his fortune told by Jim’s magic hairball.
  • He starts to like school.
  • He starts to like living by the river (he’s easy to please).
  • After being beaten and mistreated by his drunk Pap, Huck fakes his own death using pig’s blood and jets off to Jackson’s Island.
  • He meets Jim on the island.
  • Huck plays a prank on Jim that results in Jim getting bitten by a rattlesnake. Guilt follows.
  • He pretends to be a girl and chats with Mrs. Judith Loftus, garnering information about his own supposed death.
  • He and Jim discover three robbers on a wrecked steamboat.
  • Huck tries unsuccessfully to get the robbers saved.
  • He is unable to explain the point of the biblical Solomon story to Jim.

  • Huck is witness to the many cons of the duke and king, including The Royal Nonesuch.
  • He starts to feel ashamed at all this lying and conning, particularly where Mary Jane and an enormous inheritance are thrown into the mix.
  • Huck’s steals the gold from the inheritance and hides it in the coffin of the dead Peter Wilks. He also comments on the totally awesome undertaker.
  • He devises a plan and confides in Mary Jane. He and Jim try to escape from the duke and king but fail.
  • Huck goes to Silas Phelps’s farm to get Jim back and pretends to be Tom Sawyer (their nephew) when he gets there.
  • Huck intercepts Tom Sawyer before he gets to the farm.
  • He schemes with Tom to free Jim.
  • Huck runs to get a doctor to help Tom with the gunshot wound.
  • He returns home to be chastised by Aunt Sally.
  • He finds out that Jim is free and his father dead
  • He plans to head west.
