Character Role Analysis

The Narrator

Half the story belongs to the narrator. The story begins with the narrator as an impoverished single mother and follows the gradual improvement of her circumstances.

The other half of the story belongs to Emily, the narrator's daughter. The narrator's reflections center on Emily's life from birth to the present. The narrator considers and reconsiders Emily's development as her own circumstances change.
