Antagonist

Character Role Analysis

The Apartheid State

Mark's antagonist isn't one person, but is an entire system. Mark is constantly fighting against the police, the government, the whites that support the apartheid ideology, and even the blacks who can't see that Mark's success will help all of them to break the system. It is Mark's determination and courage in the face of this antagonistic machine that ultimately allows him to succeed and escape to better life in the United States.
