Papa Timeline and Summary

  • At the beginning of Kaffir Boy Papa is arrested because his pass book isn't in order. He spends two months doing hard labor on a white farm.
  • Papa is laid off. Trying to find work, he's arrested and sent to Modderbee prison.
  • Papa opposes Mark's schooling.
  • When Mark is successful, Papa suggests that Mark is trying to be white. Papa consistently threatens to send Mark to learn how to be a Venda warrior.
  • Papa urges Mama to help him start brewing illicit liquor. They do, but stop eventually because the risks are too great.
  • Papa opposes Mark's schooling and interest in tennis.
  • When Mark leaves for America, Papa cries, demonstrating that he loves Mark after all and will miss him.
