The Guide

Character Analysis

In Chapter 15, when Davie is trying to cross the island of Mull, he has two bad encounters with Highlanders. The first is the guide, who keeps pretending to forget his English just long enough to extort more money from Davie. Finally, Davie chases him off after stealing his knife and his boots. Davie lets the shmo walk home barefoot. Sweet revenge!
