Lord Jim

Lord Jim

by Joseph Conrad

Antagonist

Character Role Analysis

Cornelius

We very nearly argued for Jim in this role, since he is really his own worst enemy. But in the battle for villain number one, Cornelius takes the cake. He's just plain awful.

He hates Jim, he hates his family, and he seems to hate the whole world. But what really seals the deal is the scheming role Cornelius plays in the whole Gentleman Brown debacle that brings about Jim's tragic death.
