Opinion:
“Religion plays an interesting role in Lord of the Flies. Religion is a creation of civilization, one that comforts man and provides him an incentive to follow a moral code. The role of religion is different in the novel. The boys reject this notion of religion, and shift to more of a demagogical superstition. They worship Jack and the beast, reenacting hunts and performing ritualistic killings. They make offerings to the beast to appease it. Simon on the other hand is a more traditional religious figure. He meditates, desires to help others, and most of all, he understands things the others don’t. Unfortunately, the other boys went crazy and killed him before he could help anyone.”
