Guide Mentor

Character Role Analysis

Monsieur Lheureux

Monsieur Lheureux certainly guides Emma – but not in a good way! Rather than being a mentor, he’s a tempter. He’s the Serpent to her Eve, and the temptations of his wares are ultimately what drive Emma to ruin. He manipulates her and teaches her all the wrong things about finances, and his training sets Emma up for disaster. She’s a willing pupil – basically, Emma wants to believe everything that sounds like it’ll get her what she wants. Lheureux knows exactly how to convince Emma, and he plans her financial downfall from the very beginning.
