Maniac Magee Chapter 24 Summary

  • Despite the fact that he just polished off the better part of 30 Butterscotch Krimpets, by the time they get back to the bandstand, Maniac is ready for dinner. He and Grayson hit up a diner and Maniac polishes off a meal that includes mashed potatoes.
  • Grayson's curiosity gets the better of him as he wonders if "'them black people, they eat mashed potatoes, too?'" (24.4). Maniac tells Grayson all about Mrs. Beale and life with the Beales, and Grayson's eyes get opened a little bit: "'Ain't that somethin'...ain't that somethin'...'" (24.26).
  • As Grayson leaves Maniac at the bandstand for the night, we find out that Grayson wanted to be a baseball player when he grew up.
