Lord Ravenshaw is the person at whose house Mr. Yates first encountered the play Lovers' Vows. This production was interrupted by the death of one of the cast member's grandmothers. A depressed Mr. Yates then left to visit his friend Tom at Mansfield, still infected with the acting bug. It is notable that Mr. Yates first performed Lovers' Vows among a group of nobles, including Lord Ravenshaw and a duke. During this time period, the aristocracy were often accused of having no morals and the fact that these aristocrats were putting on a scandalous play would have been an interesting point to Austen's readers.
