Character Role Analysis
The midwife shows up at two points in Moll's story right when Moll is at her most desperate. The first time, Moll is pregnant and unwed. She can't get a guy to help her until she has the baby, but luckily the midwife is there to help Moll through all nine months and beyond. Later, when Moll has become too old to trade sex for money, she returns to the trusty midwife, who teaches Moll a new way of making a living: stealing stuff. So while she may not always guide Moll down the path, at least Moll has a guide.
