Solve 0.5 + 0.94 + 0.032.

First, we add zeros to the decimals so they all have the same number of decimal places. We at Shmoop don't always preach conformity, but in this case it's a must:

0.500 + 0.940 + 0.032

Now, we line them up at the decimal point and add:

   0.500
   0.940
+ 0.032
= 1.472
