Arete

Queen of the Phaiakians, wife to Alkinoös, and mother to Nausikaa. She’s the dominant one in her marriage, so Odysseus has to get her to like him in order to obtain help from her husband and her people. Arete is also a clever woman, as she figures out from Odysseus’s clothing that Nausikaa has already helped him. Her name means “excellence.”
