Bartholomew’s vehemence regarding her wedding ring is an illustration of how marriage was widely held in reverence during the Victorian age.

Here there is no social pressure for Orlando to get married, which contrasts heavily with her experience in the Victorian era.

Orlando holds a rather different opinion during the Victorian era, when she would have welcomed proposals of marriage. This passage also demonstrates her desire for more in life than jewelry and a rich husband.
