Orlando

by Virginia Woolf

Analysis: Tone

Take a story's temperature by studying its tone. Is it hopeful? Cynical? Snarky? Playful?

Official, Ironic

Since this is a mock biography, Woolf writes as a fake biographer, and as a fake biographer, she has to sound authoritative. However, she’s making fun of the whole genre of biography, so her tone is inherently ironic.
