Lorraine has to leave the scene, to avoid trouble with her mother, but John stays with Mr. Pignati's body.
He reflects on the sadness of life, and how he thinks that Lorraine doesn't understand him: "Didn't she know how sick to my stomach it made me feel to know it's possible to end your life with only a baboon to talk to?"
After the ambulance takes Mr. Pignati's body away, John finds Lorraine near the zoo entrance. She strikes out at him, yelling, "We murdered him!"
Lorraine calms down, and John reflects that they and Mr. Pignati had each trespassed onto each other's territory. There is no one else to blame anymore, John concludes.
