Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: an Introduction
by J.D. Salinger
Character Role Analysis
Seymour is the guide to end all guides. Buddy describes him as a god-knower, a mystic, a truly spiritual man, and we know from Franny and Zooey (and from the line about Sappho in "Roof Beam") that Seymour is responsible for educating all of the Glass family children. He even took a role as counselor and arbiter for the family – remember the story about the Davega bicycle? It was Seymour who was called upon to put the matter to rest.
