A fool's paradise Why Should I Care

Why Should I Care?

Have you ever…

  • finished taking a test that you didn't study for, and still hoped for an A+?
  • broken your mom's favorite vase, hidden the evidence, and thought you'd get away with it?
  • ignored your curfew to go to a party and hoped you wouldn't get busted?

We thought so. Then you, dear Shmooper, were living in a fool's paradise—at least for a little while. We've all done it. Hoped for the best when we know things are, in all likelihood, circling the drain. Defied all odds in thinking that our parents or teachers wouldn't notice what we were doing, and we'd get away with blissful happiness (or whatever we thought that was at the time).

A fool's paradise can come in all shapes and sizes. In Romeo and Juliet, the Nurse is warning against living in a fool's paradise because it will only get you in trouble. But don't worry, our boy Romeo doesn't listen to her prattle. And we're betting you won't either. So welcome to paradise, fool.
