Twinkling of an eye: Meaning Now

What do we mean when we say it today?

Nowadays, we just say "the blink of an eye" rather than Shakespeare's old-school "twinkling," but the phrase has the same meaning. It's just another way of saying something happened really, really fast. So fast, in fact, that if you blink, you'd miss it.

Figuratively speaking, of course.
