The Shining Chapter 15 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Down in the Front Yard

  • Danny and Wendy are back from town. Wendy bought Danny a model car kit, a prize for his continuing progress in learning to read.
  • Jack tells Danny he has a present for him, too. Wendy and Jack watch Danny climb the steps to go look for the gift. Jack and Wendy talk about how happy they are here at the Overlook.
  • A rarity, Jack tells Wendy he loves her. She says she loves him, too.
  • Now they're talking about Danny. Wendy thinks Danny shouldn't be trying so hard to learn to read.
  • She wants him to see a doctor, just to have him checked out before they are snowed in. Jack agrees this is a great idea.
  • Excitedly, Danny comes running toward them with the empty wasps' nest. Wendy is instantly creeped out by it. Jack assures her all the wasps are dead, and asks Danny if he wants it in his bedroom. Danny definitely does.
  • When Jack shows Wendy his wasp-stung finger, she kisses it. She says she "hate[s]…anything that stings" (15.68). Jack says he does, too.
