Language and Communication Quotes

How we cite our quotes:

Quote #7

"(GET OUT OF HIS MIND, YOU LITTLE SHIT!)"(41.8)

This time the Overlook or one of his agents is poking into Danny's mind, when Danny's trying to read Jack's. It's a pretty frightening moment.

Quote #8

(GET OUT OF HERE YOU DIRTY NIGGER TURN AROUND THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSSINESS […] TURN AROUND OR WE WE'LL KILL YOU HANG YOU UP FROM A TREE LIMB […]) (49.66)

In addition to being sexually predatory and violent, the Overlook seems to be racist as well. Or, perhaps, it's just telling Halloran whatever it thinks will be most successful in scaring him away from the hotel. It doesn't scare him off, but it does make him go off the road. The inconvenient thing about shining is that it can block out the 'real world' and it doesn't care what you're doing at the time.

Quote #9

"I repeat, an enormously important announcement from your father. Please stay tuned or tune immediately to the Happy Jack frequency." (26.21)

Yep. This is when Jack hears his mother's voice coming from the radio. It's hard to know if this is a hallucination, or something the Overlook does. Either way, it suggests that Jack thinks his mother is complicit with his father in trying to hurt Jack.
