Character Analysis

Watson is the caretaker of the Overlook during the season. We can't hear the name "Watson" without thinking of the Dr. John Watson, sidekick to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. We think he's here to remind us that we're inside of a deep mystery, but not necessarily one that can be solved in the usual way, if it all. Watson himself is part of this mystery -- he has connection to the Overlook's origins. His great grandfather, Robert Townley Watson is the man who built the Overlook, completed in 1909. (See "Setting" for a bit more on that.)
