Slaughterhouse-Five Chapter 5, Section 6 Summary

  • Billy jumps forward about 10 days in time, to a visit with his family to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.
  • When he's inside the caverns, a park ranger turns out the lanterns for a moment so that the tourists can experience total darkness.
  • Billy can't see anything at all: he loses track of whether he's still alive or not.
  • Then Billy catches a glimpse of his father's lighted watch dial.
