Character Role Analysis

Gitano and Grandfather

The fact that parts two and four are concerned with old men returning home is no co-inky-dink. In both stories, an old guy returns to a place that should feel like home, but finds he's a bit unwelcome. Gitano and Jody's Grandfather are both elderly and tired from a long life, and both men want to relive their past in their own way. But whereas Jody's Grandfather ends his story passively sitting on the porch, Gitano ends his riding off into the sunset in a last ditch effort to control the end of his life.
