The Things They Carried

The Things They Carried

by Tim O'Brien

Truth Seeker

Character Role Analysis

Mitchell Sanders

Mitchell Sanders is the guy who's always searching for the moral to the story. The moral doesn't have to make sense – remember, we're going with O'Brien's view of truth, here – but it does need to be there. He has to find some small amount of truth in every situation. Once he's found it, he needs to communicate it. He talks about finding the moral so often that Tim can even predict when he's going to bring it up just by the expression on his face.
