From 11:00PM PDT on Friday, July 1 until 5:00AM PDT on Saturday, July 2, the Shmoop engineering elves will be making tweaks and improvements to the site. That means Shmoop will be unavailable for use during that time. Thanks for your patience!
Friday, December 24, 2006 (Henry is 43, Clare is 35)
In the wee morning hours, Henry commemorates the 37th anniversary of his mother's death. He reflects on the fact that not even his fervent memory could bring her back. All he could do was travel to her. He wonders how Clare will manage without him. "What will Clare have when I'm gone? How can I leave her?" (2.28.3).
Henry watches Clare make breakfast for Alba, marveling at her efficiency. Seeing mother and daughter together, he longs to stay there. He longs to live.
