Saturday, March 13, 1999 (Henry is 35, Clare is 27)
Henry and Clare visit Charisse and Gomez, who have just had their third child. Clare loves holding Charisse's baby, filled with longing.
When Charisse asks Henry if he wants to hold the baby too, he panics and steps outside. He realizes that his father never held him when he was a baby. When Henry tells Gomez that they've had three miscarriages so far, Gomez comments that to lose three babies "looks like carelessness" (2.7.28).
