The 19th Amendment to the Constitution was adopted on this day in 1920. It finally gave women the right to vote. What took so long? Well, anti-suffragettes had all sorts of fears about what would happen to ladies if they could elect their government representatives. They feared they'd become ugly, hideous monsters! They feared they'd ban booze! They feared they'd become big meanies! Ultimately, anti-suffragettes' anxieties were completely unfounded and more than a little ridiculous. There were exactly zero reports of women turning into terrifying, teetotaling swamp creatures once they were allowed to go to the polls.
