Novelist Theodore Dreiser was born on this day in 1871. His two most famous works are Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy. The latter may never have been written had Dreiser not changed his mind about his holiday travel plans. In 1912, Dreiser was on vacation in Europe and intended to take a little ship called The Titanic home to New York. Luckily, his publisher talked him into taking another, less expensive, less about-to-hit-an-iceberg ship across the Atlantic.
