Charles Dickens was born on this day in 1812. Dickens was the first famous author to take his prose on tour, and his public performances—especially of A Christmas Carol —were wildly popular. Fans would camp out overnight to secure tickets, and his second, and final, tour of America netted him £19,000 (about £1.4 million today). Author…rock star…same thing.
